Mario Kart: BMW Edition

An interactive, reverse-engineered Mario Kart experience featuring 12 custom 3D modeled colleagues from work, fully working on the original Nintendo Switch hardware. On top I have added a drivable BMW E30 M3. The game was debuted live at our BMW Team Summerfest

Tools: Blender, VS Code, Photoshop, countless modding tools and a LOT of coffee 🙂

This required executing a full hardware and software reverse-engineering pipeline:

  • Hardware Exploitation: Jailbroke an original Nintendo Switch console to gain root access to the system and storage files.

  • Asset Extraction: Dumped the original Mario Kart 8 game files to isolate the proprietary game engine architectures.

  • Reverse Engineering & Asset Modding: Deconstructed the game’s internal file structures to swap out original Nintendo 3D character models, textures, and assets.

  • Custom Integration: Fully rigged, textured and animated custom-built 3D models representing my working colleagues, ensuring they are fully integrated into the game’s original physics engine.

The Result & Impact

The final customized game was showcased live on the big screen at the BMW Team Summerfest. It was an absolute showstopper – creating many smiles as everybody got to race against each other using their real-life characters.
