MINI IPA App & Launcher Widget

Project Overview

The MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA) App is the in-car digital hub that bridges the physical driving experience with advanced, LLM-powered artificial intelligence. Running on the circular MINI Interaction Unit (OLED display) within MINI Operating System 9, this specialized application was built to drive user engagement, simplify vehicle control, and introduce a proactive, character-driven companion (featuring Spike, MINI’s digital canine avatar).

Instead of a static settings menu, I designed a highly personalized, context-aware dashboard that acts as the brain of the cabin. It continuously analyzes driver habits, proactively suggests unexplored vehicle features, organizes daily routines, and serves as the command center for all advanced speech-interaction settings.

Core Feature Pillars

1. Engagement-Based Personalized Shortcut Hub

  • Context-Driven Suggestions: Designed the layout logic for a dynamic, intelligent shortcut hub that promotes frequently used functions and features based on real-time context and user engagement.

  • Frictionless Interaction: Placed highly repetitive actions (e.g., specific climate, seat massage, or media preferences) just one tap away, removing the need to dig through nested menus.

2. Contextual Surrounding Area POIs (Points of Interest)

  • Local Discovery: Designed the visual integration for location-based suggestions, dynamically surfacing landmarks, cafes, restaurants, and tourist spots.

  • Charging-Break Optimizations: Specifically mapped out UI touchpoints that suggest the perfect local spot to grab a coffee or take a quick break while the vehicle is fast-charging.

3. “Discover your MINI” – AI-Driven Feature Onboarding

  • Unexplored Feature Analysis: Designed a system that quietly tracks which native car features the driver hasn’t interacted with yet.

  • Active IPA Onboarding: If a feature is predicted to be useful based on past behavioral data, the system prompts the Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA) to proactively suggest, explain, and onboard the user to that feature using conversational voice dialogues.

4. “Example Commands” –  Unlocking the Power of the LLM

  • Interaction Boosters: To help users understand the full scope of a modern Large Language Model (LLM) assistant, I designed a category-sorted interactive database of speech commands.

  • Engagement & Tips: Created clear, snackable visual tips to educate drivers on how to get the cleanest voice interaction experience, directly driving up overall voice-engagement rates and lowering user friction.

5. Core Speech & Personalization Settings

  • Centralized VUI Control: Architected the settings panel where users can customize the “Wake-Up Word” (“Hey MINI”), configure the intelligent proactive proposal system, and swap between the classic system waves and the fully animated Spike avatar.

My Contribution & Impact

As the Lead UX Designer for Display & Interaction GUI Concepts and Pre-Development UX Team Lead, I developed the visual, structural, and behavioral UX design of this central intelligence hub.
